A Glorious Day for Golf: Captain’s Prize Outing at Milltown

Union news

The sun shone brightly over Milltown Golf Club on Thursday, 8th May, as a large contingent of Blackrock College Union members gathered for the annual Captain’s Prize outing, hosted this year by David Butler (Class of 1993).

In a welcome innovation, this year’s competition adopted a new team scramble format with an afternoon shotgun start, which proved to be a big hit among players. The relaxed format, combined with the beautiful weather and spirited camaraderie, made for a thoroughly enjoyable day on the course.

The competition was fiercely contested, with excellent scoring across the board. Just over half a shot separated the top two teams. The Union President Karl O’Neill and his team delivered an impressive round but were narrowly edged into second place. The honours went to Tom Kennedy and his team of Michael & Max Cantrell and Andy Sheehan, who carded a winning score of 56.25.

Individual accolades included:

Longest Drive: Tom Kennedy

Nearest the Pin: Wooly O’Sullivan

David Butler was warmly supported by a strong turnout from the Class of 1993, adding a special sense of occasion to the evening. During the prizegiving, David delivered a heartfelt speech, thanking all those who took part, the winning teams, Milltown Golf Club for their hospitality, the Golf Society committee, and most especially Clodagh Thorne, Union Administrator, whose tireless work helped ensure the day ran smoothly.

Looking ahead, our next outing will be the Union President’s Prize, hosted by Mark Rogan (Class of 1993), taking place on Tuesday, 9th September in Elm Park Golf Club. We look forward to another great day of golf and fellowship.

Robert McCarthy

Union Golf Society Secretary.
