How to use AI for Exam Preparation

Especially when time is limited, why not harness AI to help?

As AI tools such as ChatGPT become more common place in society and academics, it is an excellent skill to be able to use these effectively, and exam season is the perfect opportunity to harness these tools to streamline revision processes and enhance study strategies.

Here are some ways you might utilise AI over the coming weeks:

1. Personalised study schedules and planning

  • suddenly having unstructured days and impending exams can result in procrastination and an inability to know how to organise your time. Use AI with prompts such as:

Create a personalised study timetable for my upcoming exam block. I have 4 exams: ACCT1110 (on x/x/25), BISM1201 (on x/x/25), ECON1310 (on x/x/25) & MGTS1301 (on x/x/25). I want it to start at 8am each morning and finish by 10pm each night. There should be 4 hours worth of breaks throughout each day. I prefer to have at least 2 hour blocks per subject. I need 1.5 times more study for ACCT1110 than the other subjects. The topics for ACCT1110 are current assets, liabilities and equity, non-current assets, cashflow statements, and analysis and interpretation of financial statements. The topics for BISM1201 are.... etc.

2. Summarising lecture notes or readings

  • try and get AI to condense materials into studyable material (i.e. something that can be flashcardable, a mindmap, or a sampe question and answer). The caveat with this is that you'll need a basic level of understanding of the content to ensure that the summary is effective and accurate

3. Practice Questions and Quizzes

  • some past exam papers can be found on the UQ library website. If you course isn't there, or you've already completed the papers that are there, use AI to generate you more practice questions, or even full exams. Use the learning outcomes or previous questions as prompts - e.g. the learning outcomes for BISM1201 are: anaylse and evaluate the role of business information systems in organisation. Create a 20 mark practice exam based on this learning outcome, with multiple choice and short answer questions (then once attempted - create a suitable sample answer or marking guide).

IMPORTANT ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS

  • Ensure you abide by the university's specific guidelines on the use of AI tools
  • Always cross-reference information with reliable sources
  • Avoid plagiarism and cheating. Do not generate answers for online exams or assignments and attempt to submit them as your own work
